Michael Stipe Biography Michael Stipe (American, born 1960) is a multifaceted artist, producer, and singer/songwriter whose career has spanned over four decades. Best known as the frontman of the legendary band R.E.M., Michael Stipe has sold over 100 million records worldwide and left an indelible mark on the music industry. Beyond his musical achievements, Michael Stipe has made significant contributions to the art world, focusing on cross-medium work that explores the intersections of video, soundscape, sculpture, and photographic and digital imagery. His recent photo books, including Volume 1 (2018), Our Interference Times: A Visual Record (2019), and Even the Birds Gave Pause (2023), showcase his innovative approach to visual storytelling, further solidifying Michael Stipe's position as a dynamic and influential contemporary artist. Born in Decatur, Georgia, Michael Stipe's artistic journey began at an early age.
